Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset. Traveller rating. Many positives, but felt more like an apartment, not like a hotel. Pretty furnishings, great location, very clean. Since the hotel management staff and breakfast were in another building, it felt a bit isolated. Entering the hotel at night was through a short dark alley, with no light at the door. While it was cold outside, the room was always very warm, and we could not control the heat. Breakfast was nice, linens were plentiful and good quality. We loved looking over a canal, it was comfortable and quiet.
Date of stay: January Sleep Quality. Trip type: Travelled with family. Room Tip: Ask for room in hotel building. If not, ask for room overlooking canal. Helpful Share. We checked in late, around 10 at night, and the concierge was extremely rude and did not even welcome us.
He took us to the elevator and told us the room number, and then walked away. Did not offer us any information as to how to get to the room, did not help with any bags, did not tell us anything about breakfast in the morning. The room was disgustingly hot and stuffy, so we opened the window We were up all night swatting flies around us and getting bit by bugs.
I woke up covered in mosquito bites from head to toe. We had to keep the window closed, and for some reason even in March our room was so hot we were sweating. No one told us not to open the window and this would have been some very helpful advice. We called the front desk and asked them how to use the mosquito trap that they had sitting on the desk.
They did not offer any help, and said "I don't know. Walls are extremely thin and we could hear the people next to us yelling and arguing with each other all night. Staff was very unfriendly, and I wish I had asked for my money back and gone to a different hotel. Date of stay: March Trip type: Travelled with friends. Room Tip: Do not open your windows. La Locandiera Hotel Reviews, Venice
No Frills. I took my mum to Carnival and we stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. The hotel is in a fantastic spot just a few minutes walk from St Marks Square and really close to a Vaporetto stop which made getting around super easy. The reception there is 24 hours though and someone showed us back to our room.

The room itself is very basic, but you would expect that given this is a basic hotel and you get what you pay for. It was clean, warm and the shower was decent. The beds and pillows were quite hard and the walls are thin which meant we heard the neighbours coming home late at night, but again, you get what you pay for. There was no tea or coffee making facilities which was disappointing given everything is relatively expensive when eating and drinking out. Definitely not value for money.
I would recommend going out for breakfast - you can get better, cheaper just around the corner. All in all, a fairly decent stay in a no frills hotel close to the action. Date of stay: February ShamrockS24 wrote a review Jan Coventry, United Kingdom 28 contributions 56 helpful votes.
La Locandiera has location - at a price. We travelled to Venice from Rome by train and buying a basic map after disembarking at Venice train station, we eventually found this hotel having lost GPS totally at times which only has a doorway frontage and can be easily missed. We buzzed the intercom only to be told we had to check in at a hotel around the corner. It transpired that this was also the hotel where we needed to go for breakfast. Obviously these two hotels are linked and the La Locandiera does not its own dining facility - I guess space is limited.

We did have an issue on check in - we were two friends and had asked specifically for a twin room via Thomas Cook. On being shown to our room by Pierre there was only a double bed - a tad embarrassing. We asked Pierre if the bed could be split with extra bedding provided but he stated this could not be done until the morning, to which we were surprised and disappointed.
Therefore one of us had to rough it for the night as whilst the double bed could be split into two single units, the bedding was for a double only. On finalising our check in Pierre, whose command of English was very good, he laboured the point that he received no communication regarding a twin room - he presented a form to back up his position but given this was in Italian is was very hard to dispute - it way well have been TCs fault, As mentioned above breakfast was served at the Casa Verardo hotel.
It consisted of mainly continental with some pre-cooked bacon exceptional fatty and scrambled eggs, which were singed to blackness wherever the egg has been in contact with the portable heating device. More disappointing we were limited to one t-bag and one small cup of tea each morning. T-bags and hot water seemed to be hidden away to prevent further consumption!
